Q
How can I improve my CV?
A
Your CV is the first thing a prospective employer sees. As your personal advertisement, it needs to capture attention, make the right first impression and leave the reader wanting to meet you.
It is essential to include relevant information about your career to date and your qualifications. Work experience should be presented in reverse chronological order, starting with your current or most recent position. You should provide details about where you have worked and for whom, the type of businesses and dates. Remember to list your key responsibilities, duties and achievements. This information will give prospective employers an insight into your experience and the level at which you have been working.
Employers receive lots of CVs and it is therefore important to adopt a clear and easy-to-read approach. Short paragraphs and bullet points are recommended. Your CV should also be free of any spelling or grammatical errors and be accompanied by a short introductory letter. Finally, and most important, tailor your CV to each role so that you can highlight the skills and experience that individual employers are looking for.
Q
How can I perform better at interviews?
A
The first thing to think about is any feedback you may have received from previous interviews. This is likely to indicate your strengths and weaknesses. It is always advisable to adopt a professional, business like approach even if the interview appears informal. Never try to be too humorous as this can destroy credibility. In addition to listening to what you say, the interviewer will be looking at the way in which you conduct yourself and assessing what impression this would make among their own clients and senior colleagues.
It is perfectly normal to feel nervous at interviews so remember to breathe deeply and slowly to counteract this. Start off with a firm, confident hand shake, good eye contact and a smile. During the interview maintain eye contact and listen carefully to each question. You should answer the questions asked and try not to waffle. Once you’ve given your answer, stop talking.
Always prepare a number of questions in advance. Even if some are answered during the interview, try and ask at least two questions at the end. These could include details about how you will be managed, the review structure and long term prospects. This will demonstrate that you are genuinely interested in the organisation. Finally, once the interview has finished, ask what will happen next.
On leaving, shake hands again and thank the interviewer for their time.
